Living in Sant Gervasi

The Onsider is located in the prestigious Sant Gervasi neighborhood and, without a doubt, this is one of the best areas in Barcelona. In this post we show you some of the many reasons that make it the most prestigious, safe and coveted place to live.

IT IS A NEIGHBORHOOD WITH HISTORY

The Sant Gervasi-Galvany neighborhood occupies the lower part of the old town of Sant Gervasi, between Diagonal and Ronda del Mig. The name Galvany became popular when the municipal market in the area adopted it, recovering that of the former owner of the surrounding land, Josep Castelló i Galvany. The Camp d’en Galvany development began in 1866.

The first thing that was built was the market, in whose surroundings houses were built. The arrival of the Sarrià train, which crossed the neighborhood, ended up driving the urbanization process. Influential families had their Modernist palaces and mansions built between the late 19th and late 20th centuries. Today, it is considered the “chic” neighborhood of Barcelona, although it still retains its village appearance, due to its large number of narrow streets, local places and its small squares.

GREEN ZONES

In addition to its historical wealth, our neighborhood is one of the best places to live for all nature lovers, especially because of its proximity to the Collserola mountain. There you can find large green areas such as the Jardin del Turó de Putxet, the Parque de La Oroneta or, a few kilometers away, the famous Carretera de las Aigües, highly recommended for sports fans who seek to isolate themselves from the noise of the city. We recommend you visit the Turó Park, just 8 minutes from The Onsider. It is a secluded and elegant place that has century-old trees and one of the most impressive spaces in the park is the pond, surrounded by trees and covered with water lilies that bloom in spring. However, if there is one space that stands out above the rest, it is the Tibidabo mountain, one of the main attractions of the neighborhood. It can be reached through different options, both by public transport and by car.

GREAT ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE

Sant Gervasi has a very rich architectural heritage that ranges from the stately homes to the mixture of styles of Santa Maria de la Bonanova or the Valldonzella convent. Two examples of its architecture are the Sagnier House and the Ramonet House, a magnificent garden tower that currently houses a public library. Some buildings from the rural past of the neighborhood still remain, such as the old Can Casals farmhouse or Can Pomaret. Buildings such as Casa Roviralta on Avenida Tibidabo or the La Rotonda building, recently restored on Passeig Sant Gervasi, are also particularly relevant. The Mercat Galvany is one of the most emblematic markets in Barcelona and has a great gastronomic offer and services. It was inaugurated in 1927 and its iron structure and large glass windows make it an artistic monument of the city. If you stay at The Onsider, you will have it just 5 minutes away on foot.

GOOD EDUCATIONAL AND HEALTH SERVICES

In terms of health, Sant Gervasi has 29 hospital care centers and 5 primary care centers. In addition, in this area you can find up to 180 private medical centers, 100 pharmacies and five urban spas. As for the educational part of the district, it is made up of 42 primary, 36 secondary and 32 university education centers (we highlight the Abat Oliba and Ramon Llull universities), in addition to a boarding school and five international schools.

GOOD CONNECTION WITH THE HOLE CITY

It has a good combination of public transport with the Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat (FGC) that connect directly with Plaza Catalunya, it also has different Barcelona subway lines (L9, L6 and L7) and several bus lines that cover the area. Its proximity to the Vallvidrera tunnels makes access to the Vallès region very easy. The Blue Tram is still an option to get around and in turn is another way to discover the history of the neighborhood. It dates from 1901 and makes a 1,276-meter ascent route towards the foot of the Tibidabo funicular. It goes up surrounded by modernist and noucentista buildings that give way to nature and magnificent views of the city. It is an alternative way to access the CosmoCaixa (Science Museum), the Tibidabo amusement park, the Sagrado Corazón temple, the Collserola communications tower and the Fabra Observatory.
